What you get

Two decisions and one survey

You have two things to decide: how many panels your roof and bills can justify, and how much storage you want for the evenings. Put a detached house in Wetherby next to a 1930s semi in Roundhay and a back-to-back in Armley and you get three different answers, so nobody should price one from a photo. The price gets fixed after a survey.

AFL Solar takes your enquiry, rings to see whether the house suits solar and sets up the survey. The MCS-certified installation team then does the measuring and the design, and you get a fixed written quote. Some roofs are wrong for solar, and if yours is one of them we will tell you.

What every quote covers

Free home survey
The MCS-certified installation team measures the roof, goes through your bills and checks the loft and consumer unit. Allow between half an hour and an hour. You are under no obligation.
A fixed quote in writing
Every line itemised: panels, inverter, battery, scaffold, electrical work and paperwork. That price holds on the day.
Panels to match your usage
About 3.5 kW for a typical semi. Your roof and your bills can push that up or down, and the right system beats the biggest one.
A battery for your evenings
Most start at 5 kWh. Households with an EV, a heat pump or a lot of people in them usually need more, and most systems can grow later.
MCS certificate
The installer issues it when the job is finished. Your export tariff and your home insurer will both want to see it.
0% VAT
Qualifying home installations are zero-rated until 31 March 2027 and 5% after that. The invoice date decides which rate you pay.
West Yorkshire figures

What a roof makes here and where the money comes from

2,678 kWh

a year from 3.5 kW

Worked out for a typical roof at the PVGIS figure for the north of England, 850 kWh per kWp.

26.32p

a unit you stop buying

The price cap rate for Oct to Dec 2026. Use a unit off your own roof and this is what you keep.

8p

a unit if you export with no battery

So if the house sits empty all day, a battery will do you more good than extra panels.

Indicative figures as of 6 November 2026, confirmed at your survey. The sums use 850 kWh per kWp a year, 0.9 for the roof, 26.32p to import (the Ofgem cap rate) and 8p to export.

Where the saving comes from

What you use matters more than what you make

Leeds roofs do most of their work between ten and four. With nobody home, that power goes to the grid for about 8p a unit, then you buy it back at teatime for 26.32p. Closing that gap is the battery’s shift.

With no battery, a working household tends to use 30 to 40 per cent of its solar. A battery lifts that to around 70 per cent. For a 3.5 kW system, that moves you from keeping a few hundred units a year to keeping most of them, for the whole life of the battery.

Got panels already? Here is how adding a battery works

No battery
The house gets through about a third of the roof's output. Everything else goes out at about 8p.
5 kWh battery
The daytime surplus waits for the evening, and most working households end up using around 70 per cent of their solar.
Bigger battery
Worth it if you run an EV or a heat pump, or a time-of-use tariff makes overnight charging cheap. The survey settles the size, with nothing sold on the day.
Backup in a power cut
It can be done if it is wired in during installation, and that changes the design. Mention it at the survey if you want it.

Figures as of 6 November 2026. The unit rate is Ofgem’s cap for 1 October to 31 December 2026, and the calculator uses 8p for exports. Panels and batteries stop being zero-rated after 31 March 2027: here is what that does to your timing.

Step 4: Fitted, usually in one day

The same MCS-certified installer who did the survey fits the panels, inverter and battery, then hands you the MCS certificate.

The solar and battery questions West Yorkshire asks us

Not on the list? Ring the number at the top and a person will answer it.

What will solar panels and a battery cost me in Leeds?
We do not publish a price list, because your roof, the scaffold, the consumer unit and the size of the battery all move the number. A common fit for a Leeds semi is 3.5 kW of panels with a 5 kWh battery, priced in writing after a free survey with 0% VAT already taken off if it is invoiced by 31 March 2027. Once you have the quote it is fixed, so the figure you accept is the figure you pay.
How big a system does my house need?
A Leeds semi usually takes 3.5 kW, good for around 2,678 kWh a year here. Step up to a detached house and you are nearer 4 kW (3,060 kWh). Step down to a terrace and it is more like 2.5 kW (1,913 kWh). Treat those as starting points. Your roof and your bills set the real number at the survey, and covering a roof for the sake of it is a poor way to spend money.
Will I need scaffolding, and who pays for it?
On a pitched roof, nearly always. It sits inside the fixed quote, so nobody hands you a separate bill on the day. The survey looks at access, whether a terrace that opens straight onto the pavement needs a licence, and whether the poles have to go up on next door’s side.
Will I need planning permission for solar panels in West Yorkshire?
Probably not. In England, roof-mounted solar on a house counts as permitted development as long as the panels stand no more than 200 mm proud of the roof and the building is not listed. Listed buildings always need consent. Conservation areas, including parts of Headingley, Roundhay, Saltaire and Holmfirth, add rules for roofs that face the road. We check all of that before the survey, so nobody books a scaffold first and asks questions later.
Do panels still work in a Leeds winter?
Yes, at a lower rate. Daylight does the work, so a cold bright morning is fine. Of the 2,678 kWh a 3.5 kW system makes here each year, roughly three-quarters arrives between April and September. On most December days it still covers the fridge, the router and the lights, and a cheaper overnight tariff can fill the battery for the evening.
How long does fitting take?
Most homes take one day. Add a battery and a new consumer unit and it can run to two. The scaffold goes up a day or two earlier and comes down a few days later. Survey to switch-on is usually a few weeks, and that stretches as the VAT deadline gets close, so an early survey is the sensible move.
How does the Smart Export Guarantee work?
Your electricity supplier pays you for each unit you send to the grid. Smart Export Guarantee rates vary by supplier; many pay 4p to 15p a unit. The calculator assumes 8p. To claim it you need an MCS certificate, and you get one with each system we book. A battery means exporting less and using more at 26.32p, which is normally the better deal.
Who fits the system, and who do I ring if something goes wrong?
The MCS-certified installation team, who have over 10 years and hundreds of installs behind them. The quote gives their name and MCS number, and the warranties go in your name at handover. If you need anything afterwards, ring AFL Solar on 07442 511817 and we will chase it for you.
