0% VAT ends 31 March 2027. The job needs fitting and invoicing before then.

The sums

Where your electricity goes with no battery

With nobody home in the day, around 1,500 kWh a year leaves a 3.5 kW system in West Yorkshire. Here is that electricity priced both ways, sold and kept.

Sold at 8p
£120
1,500 kWh x 8p. That is a year of surplus on a typical Smart Export Guarantee tariff.
Kept and used at 26.32p
£395
1,500 kWh x 26.32p. That is what the same units would cost you at today’s cap.

Around £275 a year stays in the house, and a cheap overnight tariff can add more.

As of 6 November 2026, using Ofgem’s cap for 1 October to 31 December 2026 (direct debit, GB average) and the 8p export rate from the calculator. Tariffs vary, and your bills will show your real export at the survey.

The January cap

January is forecast to make the gap wider

Under the cap for 1 October to 31 December 2026, electricity costs 26.32p a unit and a typical dual-fuel bill comes to £1,723 a year. Ofgem sets the next one, for January to March 2027, on 25 November 2026.

Cornwall Insight puts that period at around £1,999 in its forecast of 14 October 2026. Treat that as a forecast until Ofgem publishes, at which point this page gets the real number. The direction matters more than the figure, because every penny on the unit rate makes exporting worse value and storing better value.

What gets checked before you see a quote

Most existing systems take a battery, but what is already on your wall decides the route. Half an hour at your house settles it, and the quote you get afterwards is fixed.

A battery going on to an existing system carries 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5%. Here is why the invoice date counts.

A family sharing an evening meal at home, the time of day a battery earns its keep
Your inverter
Its make, its age and its type, string or hybrid. The answer picks the route: an AC-coupled battery or a hybrid swap.
Where it goes
It can live in a garage, in a utility room or on an outside wall. Picture a large suitcase and you have the size of a 5 kWh unit.
Consumer unit
Spare ways, the earthing and the size of the main fuse.
Your paperwork
The MCS certificate for the existing system, if there is one, and your export tariff, so nothing you already receive gets disturbed.
How you use power
Your bills and any generation history, so the battery fits your evenings and nobody has to guess.
Your questions

Adding a battery: what people ask first

Want new panels too? See panels and a battery as one job. Or go to your town: Leeds, Wakefield, Bradford, Huddersfield, Halifax.

Will a battery work with the panels I already have?
Yes, on nearly every system. An AC-coupled battery sits beside your existing inverter and does not mind who fitted your panels. If that inverter is getting old, swapping it for a hybrid inverter that also runs the battery can be the smarter route, and the survey will tell you which applies.
What does a battery for existing solar cost?
The price depends on the battery size, how it connects to your inverter and the state of your consumer unit, so you get it fixed in writing once the free survey is done. Adding a battery to the solar you already have carries 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, whether or not new panels go in with it.
What could a battery save me?
Say your 3.5 kW system sends about 1,500 kWh a year to the grid. At 8p that earns roughly £120. Use the same electricity at home and you avoid paying 26.32p for it, which is worth about £395. That leaves around £275 a year you are currently waving off down the wires, and charging overnight on a cheap tariff can add to it.
Does a battery affect my Feed-in Tariff or export payments?
A Feed-in Tariff is paid on what the panels generate, so a battery leaves it alone. On the Smart Export Guarantee you will export less because you are using more. That is the whole idea, since a unit used at home is worth about 3 times a unit exported.
How big a battery do I need?
Most homes start at 5 kWh, which covers an evening of lights, cooking, the telly and the router. An EV, a heat pump or a big family usually earns 10 kWh or more. The survey goes through your bills and generation history and sizes it to your evenings. The biggest box on the van is rarely the answer.
Who fits the battery?
The MCS-certified installation team, who have over 10 years and hundreds of installs behind them. The quote gives their name and MCS number. The battery goes in to the current standard, and its manufacturer warranty is registered in your name.
