What you get

Cheap miles depend on the set-up

Cover 8,000 miles a year and the car will want about 2,500 kWh. Charged at the standard rate, that is roughly £658. An EV tariff at around 7p brings it to £175, and summer sun off your own roof takes it lower still. Around Leeds most cars get plugged in on a drive or in a shared yard, and the money is saved in the set-up around the charger. That is the bit worth getting right.

Our part is checking the parking, the consumer unit and any solar plans, then arranging the survey. The MCS-certified installation team has over 10 years and hundreds of installs behind them. They fit the charger, certify it and link it to your panels or tariff before leaving. You get a written quote after the survey, and if a grant could apply, we look at that first.

What every EV charger job covers

Free survey
Where the car parks, where the consumer unit is, how far the cable has to run and any solar plans. Done at your house or over video.
7 kW smart charger
The usual size for a house, which fills a family EV by morning. It schedules around cheap overnight tariffs, and if you have panels it can use them first.
A circuit of its own
A dedicated breaker at the consumer unit, plus earthing work if it is needed. The charger shares nothing with the rest of the house.
Fitting and certificate
A qualified electrician does the work, usually in half a day, and you keep the certificate your insurer will ask for.
Set up on the day
Before the electrician goes, it is linked to your panels or set to your overnight tariff, and the app is on your phone.
A straight answer on grants
Renters, flat owners, landlords and workplaces may qualify for up to £500 a socket. We check whether it can be claimed for you, and any application goes in before the fitting date.
Running an EV from home

Most of the saving comes from how the charger is set up

7p

a unit overnight on an EV tariff

Schedule a family EV overnight and a full charge comes in under £5.

£175

to cover 8,000 miles in a year

That is charging overnight at 7p. The standard rate would run to about £658, and petrol to over £1,000.

½ day

to fit

New circuit, charger on the wall, testing, certificate and the link to your solar or tariff.

The sums use 2,500 kWh to cover 8,000 miles, 7p for the overnight tariff and 26.32p, the Ofgem cap rate, for the standard comparison. Petrol is 40 mpg at £1.35 a litre. Grant figures are correct as of 6 November 2026, and the survey confirms your own numbers.

What West Yorkshire drivers ask about EV chargers

What does EV charger installation cost in Leeds?
Three things move the price: the cable run from your consumer unit to where the car parks, whether the earthing needs upgrading, and whether the charger goes in alongside solar or a battery, which saves a separate visit. We do not publish a figure. You get one in writing after a free survey. Renters and flat owners may be able to get some of it back through the chargepoint grant, covered below.
Can I get a grant for an EV charger?
Some homes can, but do not budget on it until you have it in writing. If you rent, or own a flat, and have your own off-street space, the OZEV chargepoint grant can cover 75% of the cost, capped at £500 a socket. Landlords get the same cap on their properties. If you own a house with a driveway, there is nothing for you. The scheme closes on 31 March 2027, and OZEV has to approve you before anything is fitted, so the application always comes first. Claims go through an authorised installer, and we will tell you whether one can be made for you before you agree to anything.
Can I fit an EV charger myself?
Not legally, if you mean a wall charger. It needs its own circuit from the consumer unit, which makes it notifiable electrical work under Part P of the Building Regulations in England, and it has to be a smart charger that meets the 2021 regulations. A qualified electrician fits it, tests it and hands you the certificate. The only DIY option is a three-pin "granny" cable, and at 2.3 kW that takes about a day and a half to fill a family EV.
Will a charger work with my car?
Almost certainly. Every EV sold in the UK since about 2018 takes a Type 2 charger, Tesla included. What differs is the speed, whether the app can push charging into cheap hours, and whether it can follow your solar. At 7 kW, the home standard, a family EV fills overnight. The survey picks the charger to suit the car and the house.
Can the car charge from my solar panels?
It can if the charger has a solar mode. The charger watches what your panels are exporting and sends that into the car, then tops up from the grid when the sun falls short. On a summer weekday a 4 kW system in Leeds can add 15 to 20 miles for nothing. If you have a battery as well, the survey decides which one gets first call on the surplus.
How long does a charger take to fit?
Usually half a day. Most homes need a new circuit from the consumer unit and some need the earthing upgrading, and the quote covers both. Very old consumer units occasionally have to be replaced first. The survey will spot that long before anyone turns up with a drill.
I rent. Can I still have a charger?
Yes, if your landlord agrees in writing. Renters are one of the groups the grant still covers, subject to the checks above. Often the landlord applies through the landlord grant instead, and the charger then stays with the property.
Can my business put chargers in at work?
Yes. Businesses, charities and public bodies with their own off-street parking can use the Workplace Charging Scheme until 31 March 2027. It covers 75% of the cost, capped at £500 a socket, on up to 40 sockets, and we confirm whether it can be claimed for you before you agree to anything. It pairs nicely with commercial solar, since the vans can then charge off daytime generation. Ask your accountant about the tax treatment.
