What we look at

  • The system size, against what you actually use
  • Which panels, inverter and battery it names, if it names any
  • Scaffolding, the consumer unit and anything quietly left off
  • Whether it can be fitted and invoiced by 31 March 2027, while it is 0% VAT

A day on a Leeds roof

Your roof works days. You don’t.

  1. 1pm

    Nobody home, roof flat out

This is the bit that hurts. The house is empty and the roof is at full tilt, so without a battery your best power goes to the grid for about 8p a unit.

Running on: The roof, and the battery is filling

  2. 6pm

    Everyone's in, sun's off

Oven on, telly on, washing machine on. That is 26.32p a unit from the grid, unless you saved some of this afternoon for yourself.

    Running on: The battery

  3. 11pm

    That's the battery's shift

The sun has clocked off and the lights are still on what your roof made at lunchtime. On a 3.5 kW system exporting about 1,500 kWh a year, keeping it is worth roughly £395 against £120 for selling it.

    Running on: Still the battery

An illustrative day, not a forecast. Figures as of 6 November 2026; export rates vary by supplier.

The things people ask first

Not on the list? Ring the number at the top and a person will answer it.

Do solar panels really work in Leeds?
Yes. Panels run on daylight rather than heat, and West Yorkshire gets around 850 kWh per kWp a year (PVGIS). A 3.5 kW system on a typical roof makes about 2,678 kWh a year here. A grey day still generates, just less of it, and most of the year's output arrives between April and September.
Who actually fits the system?
The MCS-certified installation team, who have over 10 years and hundreds of installs behind them. AFL Solar takes your enquiry, rings you back and books the free survey. The installation team then surveys, gives you a fixed written quote and fits it. Their name and MCS number are on the quote, and the MCS certificate at handover is what your export tariff and home insurer will ask for.
How much does solar cost in Leeds?
There is no price list, because scaffolding, roofs and consumer units differ too much for one to be honest. A survey is free and the quote that follows is fixed and in writing, with 0% VAT if the job is invoiced by 31 March 2027. The calculator on this page shows what a system should save, which is the number that matters more.
When does 0% VAT on solar end?
On 31 March 2027. From 1 April 2027 the rate on panels and home batteries is 5%, confirmed in the Budget on 28 October 2026. The rate follows the tax point, normally the invoice date, so the system has to be fitted and invoiced in time. Paying a deposit does not lock the rate on the balance.
Is there a grant for solar panels?
Not for most homes. Everyone gets 0% VAT until 31 March 2027 and can claim the Smart Export Guarantee. Lower-income households with an EPC of D to G can apply to their council for the Warm Homes: Local Grant: Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield and Calderdale have funding, and Kirklees is not on the GOV.UK list (as of 6 November 2026).
Is a battery worth it if I already have panels?
Usually, if the house is empty in the day. Most of your solar then goes to the grid for about 8p a unit, and you buy it back in the evening at 26.32p on the current price cap. On a 3.5 kW system exporting about 1,500 kWh a year, storing it is worth roughly £395 a year against £120 earned.
Do you cover my area?
If you are in an LS, WF, BD, HD or HX postcode, yes. That is Leeds, Wakefield, Bradford, Huddersfield, Halifax and the towns between. Harrogate, York, Skipton, Barnsley and Selby are by arrangement. The postcode box on this page answers it straight away, or call 07442 511817.
What happens after I send the form?
One of us rings within one working day to talk through the roof, your bills and a good time for the survey. The installation team then visits, measures up and sends a fixed written quote. You decide in your own time, and nobody keeps ringing you.
